Month Quote
"Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all time thing. You don't win once in a while, you don't do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing"

Top Ten Reasons Music Education Rocks

March is National Music in Our Schools Month

Enduring your children's practice sessions (singing, instrument, theory, even dance) and sitting through hour long school concerts may sometimes make you feel like a saint -- not only because sometimes the ear assaults can be quite jostling, but also because encouraging music in their lives really is a good thing.

March is National Music in Our Schools Month, which is a nationwide program to recognize and showcase music curriculums in schools and to give kids a chance to show off what they've learned (both inside and outside the classroom). It is also a chance to show community leaders why not to target the music department programs in budget cuts. Sure, the economy is squeezing everything and everybody, but the benefit of music is proven to be a key part in our kids' development and learning.

Studies show that:

1. Kids think music is fun (and since geometry, well, is not, we need to encourage fun learning too)
2. Students who are exposed to and study music become better math and science students and earlier readers.
3. Elementary schoolers who took music lessons scored almost 50% higher on spatial testing than those not taking music.
4. Music students showed increased levels of self-esteem.
5. Students who take an instrument receive more academic awards and honors than those who don't.
6. Constant juggling of tones, tempos, rhythm, and more proved later to help brain train organization skills.
7. Junior high/high school kids who took band or orchestra showed lowest use of drug and alcohol use
8. Colleges like musical instruments on applications--it's never to early to boost your kid's qualifications!
9. Studying music teaches discipline.
10. Playing a musical instrument or appreciating music can relieve stress.

Plus, after a while, no ear plugs are necessary. It just sounds good to have music in the house.

2009 Spring Trip Information

FREEDOM HIGH SCHOOL BAND

2009 SPRING TRIP CONTRACT

I, _____________________________________________, AM

Or

I, ______________________________________________AM NOT

participating in the 2009 Freedom High School Band Spring Trip to Hershey Park in Pennsylvania, on May 22, 2009 through May 23, 2009. This document will serve as my commitment to secure the necessary funds for my trip. In addition, I understand that I must be academically eligible and that I am expected to fulfil my responsibilities as a performing member of the Freedom High School Band. All PWCS policies, Student Code of Conduct, and Extra Curricular Code of Conduct will be in effect for the duration of the trip. I understand that I am responsible for my choices/actions and the consequences of those choices/actions. I am aware that the projected cost of the trip is $175 for bus fare, hotel, entry fees, entertainment, and some but not all meals. This amount is based on about three quarter of the band participating in the 2009 Spring Trip. If enough band/guard students do not participate in the trip, an increase in the individual cost of the trip is likely. Trip payments are expected to be as follows:

The payment schedule is critical due to the fact that FHSB must make corresponding payments to the Tour Company, so each family must make a payment on or prior to each due date. Payments are due along the following timetable:

February 4th, 2009 -$75 (Payment schedule is critical, due to the fact that FHSBB must hold all reservations). February 25th, 2009 $50 and March 25th, 2009 $50 (family should make payments on or prior to these due dates.)

I also acknowledge that all trip payments made are non-refundable after February, 2009. I understand that retention of these funds is necessary to cover deposits in my name, meet any cancellation penalties, and to help defray additional costs to others incurred by my withdrawal from the trip. I understand that there will be no exceptions on the non-refundable status of the payments due to the cancellation policy of the Tour Company and bus lines, unless the reservation can be sold to someone on a “waiting list.”

I understand that, if I have outstanding band fees, I would need to pay the band fees prior to making a commitment to go on the Spring Trip. Students must be academically eligible at the Third Quarter Interim progress report.

We, the parents/guardians of _____________________________________ also understand and

agree to the conditions stated in this contract/agreement.
